Why the KelTec KP50 Stands Out on the Range

Having handled countless polymer-framed pistols over the years, from duty Glocks to competition-ready race guns, the KP50 brings something genuinely different to the table. It’s not trying to be a concealed carry piece or a traditional service pistol. Instead, KelTec leaned into the 5.7x28mm’s strengths—high velocity, light recoil, and armor-piercing potential (with specific ammunition)—and built a platform to maximize its fun factor and utility. The dual 25-round magazines feeding into a single chamber is a clever solution. It gives you a total of 50+1 rounds on tap, which is fantastic for extended range sessions or competitive shooting stages where reloads cost time. I’ve taken this out with my family, and for new shooters or younger family members who might be sensitive to heavy recoil, the 5.7x28mm in this soft-shooting blowback action is a real confidence builder.

How the KP50 Stacks Up Against the Competition

In the 5.7x28mm pistol world, there are a few key players. Let’s see how the KelTec holds its own.

Feature KelTec KP50 Ruger-57 PSA Rock 5.7
Material & Build Polymer frame, steel internals. Unique dual-mag design. Polymer frame, stainless steel slide. Traditional layout. Polymer frame, carbon steel slide. Striker-fired design.
Quality & Fit Functional and robust; classic KelTec utilitarian feel. Excellent Ruger fit and finish; very refined. Good value-oriented finish; solid for the price.
Compatibility Proprietary 25-rd mags (x2). Aftermarket support growing. Uses proprietary 20-rd mags. Good availability. Uses proprietary 23-rd mags or Ruger-57 mags.
Shipping & FFL Ships fast from our San Antonio warehouse. Widely available; standard shipping times apply. Often direct from PSA; variable shipping.

Price Point $612.26 (Our Sale Price) ~$650 – $750 ~$500 – $600

The KP50 carves its niche with pure capacity. The Ruger-57 is a more traditional, sleek, and arguably more refined pistol. The PSA Rock is a fantastic budget-friendly striker-fired option. The KP50 is for the shooter who values round count and a uniquely futuristic layout above all else.

Pros and Cons from the Armorer’s Bench

What I like:

  • Unmatched Capacity: 50+1 rounds is a huge advantage for fun or competition.
  • Low Recoil: The 5.7x28mm cartridge and blowback operation make it incredibly soft-shooting.
  • Unique & Fun Factor: This is a conversation starter and a blast to shoot.
  • Simple Design: The blowback operation is easy to understand, clean, and maintain.
  • Good Ergonomics: The grip angle and texture work well for a variety of hand sizes.

Points to consider:

  • Width: The dual-magazine design makes it wider than a standard pistol. It’s not meant for concealed carry.
  • Ammunition Cost: 5.7x28mm ammo is more expensive than 9mm. Factor that into your range budget.
  • Magazine System: Loading two magazines takes time, and the proprietary mags are your only option. If you prefer a more conventional single-stack magazine system, check out our 1911 Pistols.

Who This Pistol Is For (And Who Should Look Elsewhere)

Buy the KelTec KP50 if:

  • You’re a recreational shooter who loves high-capacity fun at the range.
  • You’re interested in the 5.7x28mm cartridge and want a dedicated, high-capacity host for it.
  • You participate in competitive shooting sports where round count minimizes reloads.
  • You’re looking for a low-recoil option to introduce new or recoil-sensitive shooters to centerfire pistols.
  • You’re a KelTec fan who appreciates their innovative and outside-the-box designs.

Consider another option if:

  • You need a concealed carry or home defense primary (its size and manual safety make it less ideal). Look at our Full Shop for more compact options.
  • Your primary concern is the absolute lowest cost of ammunition (stick with 9mm).
  • You prefer a traditional pistol layout and manual of arms over innovative designs.

See It in Action Before You Buy

I always recommend seeing a firearm handled and shot before purchasing. Plenty of great gun channels on YouTube have put the KP50 through its paces.

Your KelTec KP50 Questions, Answered

Is the KelTec KP50 reliable?

Based on my experience and testing, yes. The blowback operating system is one of the simplest and most dependable. Like any new firearm, a brief break-in period of 100-200 rounds is recommended for optimal smoothness. Using quality ammunition is key.

What is the purpose of the 5.7x28mm cartridge?

Originally developed for military PDWs (Personal Defense Weapons), it offers very high velocity, low recoil, and good penetration against soft armor. For civilians, this translates to a flat-shooting, easy-to-control round that’s excellent for target shooting and varmint control.

Can you use FN Five-seveN magazines in the KP50?

No. The KelTec KP50 uses its own proprietary 25-round double-stack magazines. They are not interchangeable with magazines from the FN Five-seveN, Ruger-57, or PSA Rock.

Is the KP50 good for home defense?

It could be used for home defense due to its high capacity and low recoil, which aids in fast, accurate follow-up shots. However, its size may be cumbersome indoors, and the 5.7x28mm round’s penetration characteristics require careful ammunition selection and consideration of your home’s layout. Many prefer a more compact shotgun or rifle for this role.

How difficult is it to field strip and clean?

It’s very straightforward, typical of KelTec’s simple designs. The process is similar to other blowback pistols: remove the magazine, ensure it’s unloaded, push out the takedown pin, and slide the upper receiver forward off the frame. No tools are required for basic disassembly.

Where can I buy a KelTec KP50 5.7x28mm pistol online?

You can purchase the KelTec KP50 right here at Californiagunshop (californiagunshop.com). We ship quickly and discreetly from our warehouse in San Antonio, Texas, to your local FFL dealer.

What kind of optics can the KP50 mount?

The KP50 comes from the factory with a Picatinny rail section mounted on top of the receiver. This allows you to mount a wide variety of red dot sights (micro, full-size, etc.) that use a Picatinny interface. It is not currently milled for specific optic footprints like the Shield RMSc.

Ready to Experience the KP50?

If the idea of a 50-round, soft-shooting, uniquely American-made pistol has your attention, the KelTec KP50 delivers. It’s a specialized tool that excels at making range time exciting and manageable for shooters of all experience levels.

  1. Rebecca F. (verified owner)

Good product, slightly different shade than the photo showed. Still works perfectly though.

  2. Jake R. (verified owner)

Did a lot of research before pulling the trigger on this purchase (pun intended). Read reviews on 3 different sites, watched YouTube videos, and ultimately went with Californiagunshop because of the price and shipping speed. Not disappointed. Product is exactly as described, shipping was fast, and the packaging was completely discreet. Already eyeing a few more items in their 1911 Pistols section.

  3. Karen W. (verified owner)

Fast shipping, great packaging, product exactly as described. I’ve ordered from Amazon before and the experience doesn’t compare. This store delivers.

  4. Scott W. (verified owner)

Bought this as part of a larger build project. Californiagunshop had the best price by a decent margin and shipping was fast. The KelTec KP50 5.7x28mm Pistol itself is well-made — Solid machining on this one. Overall this is exactly what I needed. Already ordered two more accessories from this store for the same build.

  5. Brett F. (verified owner)

Better than what I got from Amazon last time.

  6. Sarah T. (verified owner)

I don’t write reviews often but Californiagunshop deserves one. The KelTec KP50 5.7x28mm Pistol is exactly what I was looking for. Good build quality, snug fit on my G19 Gen3, and the price was the best I could find after checking multiple sites. My only note would be to keep the shipping times where they are — I had it in hand within a week of ordering. Will be a repeat customer.
