This Chester County Armory listing is for an original, factory-produced, Curio-&-Relic license eligible, Armalite AR-18 5.56mm transferable machine gun.
Built in limited production in by Armalite, Inc. in their original Costa Mesa, CA facility, the AR-18 was developed in 1963 by Armalite’s lead designer, Arthur Miller, as a scaled down version of Eugene Stoner’s AR-16 design, that he developed prior to leaving Armalite in 1961. Often called the “most successful failure” in the history of military small arms, the AR-18 is a magnificent functioning weapon, that through hap and circumstance, never was able to get a foothold in the world military market, even though it’s design and performance, and, more importantly, production costs where better than most offerings available at the time.
This particular transferable model is in excellent overall condition. This is an original, C&R eligible Armalite factory-built select-fire model, and is not a conversion. Mechanically, it is in excellent condition, with only limited wear markings noted on the bolt, piston system, and fire controls. The barrel is bright and shiny, and the six groove rifling remains clean and crisp. Cosmetically, this model is also in excellent condition! The original satin gray phosphate finish is overall very good, with only minor surface handling marks and scratches noted on the metalwork. The original high gloss forearm notes only minor handling marks and surface scratches and the folding stock and pistol grip are also fairly clean and smooth, with, again, only minor handling marks and surface scratches visible.
This weapon will come with one 40rd original magazine made under licensing by Sterling in England and one original Armalite Inc marked 20rd magazine. The extra included 20rd magazine is pencil engraved on its left side with “S.C. Co. S.O. Patrol Div. No. 5” as the magazine was at one time in the possession of Sheriff’s Office for their patrol rifles.
This Curio-&-Relic eligible, “AUTO” marked, select-fire, fully transferable machine gun is currently on a Form 3 for easy transfer. The current NFA Form 3 lists “Armalite” as the manufacturer and “AR-18” as the model.
