FN 502 Tactical 22 LR 4 6 Threaded Barrel Black

About this product

The FN 502 Tactical is FN America's optics-ready .22 LR training pistol, sized and weighted to mirror a duty-size centerfire handgun so shooters can rack up cheap rimfire trigger time without losing the feel of their carry or duty gun. This listing is the standard black finish with the 4.6-inch threaded barrel.

What makes the 502 Tactical different from a typical .22 plinker?

FN built the 502 Tactical as the first slide-mounted, optics-ready rimfire handgun, meaning the red dot mounts directly to the slide rather than a fixed frame plate, so the dot tracks with the slide the same way it would on a centerfire duty pistol. It ships with an interchangeable optics plate system and factory suppressor-height sights that co-witness through most mini red dots — a real advantage if you're using this gun to build red-dot transition speed before taking that skill to a centerfire pistol.

What are the key specs?

The 502 Tactical runs a single-action, hammer-fired system with a 4.6-inch threaded barrel at the standard rimfire 1/2x28 pitch, an overall length of about 7.6 inches, a height of roughly 5.8 inches, and a width around 1.4 inches. Unloaded weight comes in near 23.7 ounces. Magazine capacity is 10+1 in restricted-capacity configurations or 15+1 with a standard magazine, and the grip uses a polymer frame with aggressive texturing similar to FN's centerfire 509 line.

Because it's chambered in .22 LR, both ammunition cost and recoil are far lower than any centerfire duty pistol — the entire point of a trainer like this is more reps and more dot-tracking practice per range trip, not serving as your primary defensive firearm.

Who should buy the FN 502 Tactical in black?

This is the right pick for shooters who already run FN's centerfire pistols, or a similarly-sized 9mm, and want a rimfire trainer that matches their manual of arms and optic footprint. It also suits new shooters building fundamentals with low recoil, and competitive shooters who want extra live-fire reps at rimfire cost. The threaded barrel makes it a popular host for a rimfire suppressor where legal, since suppressed .22 LR is about as quiet as shooting gets, and the standard black finish is the more understated option next to FN's FDE variant.

Because this is a firearm, it cannot ship to your home address. It transfers to a licensed FFL dealer near you, where you'll complete a background check and the required paperwork in person before taking possession. California buyers should confirm current compliance — including magazine capacity restrictions and roster status — with their FFL before ordering, since state rules for handguns differ from federal requirements.

Between the black and FDE finishes, the choice really comes down to personal preference and what matches the rest of your gear — both share identical specs, features, and the same slide-mounted optics system, so neither finish shoots or performs any differently than the other. Buyers who already own FDE-finished accessories or a duty pistol in a similar tone may prefer to match their gear, while others simply prefer black's more universal, understated look. Whichever finish you choose, the underlying gun handles, feeds, and trains exactly the same, so this decision really is about aesthetics rather than function. Ongoing maintenance is minimal: field-strip and clean the bore and chamber after range sessions the same way you would with any centerfire pistol, and the threaded barrel's cap or thread protector should be checked periodically to make sure it hasn't backed off from vibration during a shooting session.
