About this product

The Glock 22 is a full-size, striker-fired semi-automatic pistol chambered in .40 S&W, built on the same polymer frame and general layout as the 9mm Glock 17 but scaled for the larger cartridge. It's been one of the most widely issued law-enforcement duty pistols in the country for decades, which means a deep pool of holsters, magazines, and aftermarket parts exist for it. Because .40 S&W has lost ground to 9mm in both law-enforcement and civilian markets over the past several years, Glock 22s today are more often bought used or as a budget alternative to a comparable 9mm Glock.

What is the Glock 22 used for?

It's a duty and home-defense pistol first, built around a caliber that historically split the difference between 9mm capacity and .45 ACP power. Plenty of shooters also buy a used Glock 22 specifically because law-enforcement trade-ins keep used prices lower than a comparable 9mm Glock, then run it as a range or truck gun.

How does it compare to the Glock 17?

The 17 and 22 share the same frame size and general controls, but the 17 runs 9mm and the 22 runs .40 S&W, which means more felt recoil and slightly lower magazine capacity in the 22 for the same frame size. 9mm ammunition is also generally cheaper and more widely stocked than .40 S&W today. If you're choosing between the two new, the 17 is the more common recommendation now; the 22 makes more sense if you already have .40 S&W ammunition or magazines, or you're buying a well-priced used trade-in.

What fits it?

Factory and aftermarket Glock 22 magazines, holsters built for the Glock 22/23/24 frame size, and most Glock OEM parts built for the .40-caliber full-size frame are compatible. Sights, triggers, and other drop-in accessories designed for the Glock 22 platform fit directly.

Who is this not for?

It's not the strongest pick for someone starting fresh with no existing .40 S&W gear, since 9mm ammunition is cheaper and more available for practice volume. It's also not a compact carry gun - this is a full-size duty pistol.

Does it work in California?

That depends on the exact generation and configuration. Older Gen3 Glock 22s that were previously listed on California's handgun roster are more likely to remain grandfathered for sale than newer Gen4 or Gen5 production, since the roster has added very few new semi-auto models in recent years. Confirm the specific listing with us before ordering. Any handgun we can deliver still ships to your local FFL with the standard 10-day wait, DROS, and Firearm Safety Certificate - see our California gun laws page for details.

FFL transfer required

This item is a firearm and ships only to a licensed FFL dealer, never to a home address. At checkout, enter your preferred dealer as the shipping address, or leave it blank and we will assign a licensed dealer near you at no extra cost. You complete the background check and paperwork with the dealer when you pick up.

California buyers: handguns must be on the California roster for delivery to a California FFL, a Firearm Safety Certificate (FSC) and DROS are handled at the dealer, and the 10-day waiting period applies. Out-of-state buyers receive the firearm through their own local FFL under their state's rules.

Frequently asked questions

Is the Glock 22 on California's handgun roster?
It depends on the generation - older Gen3 models are more likely to remain listed than newer Gen4/Gen5 production; confirm with us before ordering.
How does .40 S&W recoil compare to 9mm?
.40 S&W generates noticeably sharper recoil than 9mm in a similarly sized pistol, which is part of why many shooters and agencies have shifted back to 9mm over the past decade.
Can I convert a Glock 22 to 9mm?
Yes, with a compatible 9mm conversion barrel and magazines, though that's a separate aftermarket purchase, not something this listing includes.
Are Glock 22 and Glock 23 magazines interchangeable?
Yes - the 22 and 23 share the same .40 S&W magazine, just in different frame sizes (full-size vs. compact).
Why are used Glock 22s often cheaper than 9mm Glocks?
Large volumes of law-enforcement trade-ins have kept the used Glock 22 market well-supplied, which keeps prices competitive against comparable 9mm models.
